Applied Research Technician II: Data Analyst Intern for EIC (Summer 2026)

Position Summary

Are you an RDP student who is looking for a hands-on opportunity this summer in your field of study? Are you interested in real world experience that you will not get anywhere else?

We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative student for this summer internship position. As a Data Analyst Intern, you will have the opportunity to work closely with experts at EIC on various projects aimed at pushing the boundaries of innovation in renewable energy systems.

The Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing Technology Access Centre (CIM-TAC) is a unique part of our Red Deer Polytechnic community. The CIM-TAC turns leading edge ideas into reality by collaborating with our clients on innovative manufacturing solutions. Experts work to design and develop new products and processes and connect with partners throughout the province. The CIM-TAC is where ideas come to reality and designs come to life. Some recent projects involved use of cutting-edge additive manufacturing technologies (3D printing) for developing medical and health care devices, advanced modeling & simulation for design optimization, quality assurance using 3D scanners and robotic automation in welding.

The Energy Innovation Centre (EIC) focuses on alternative and renewable energy systems and houses Red Deer Polytechnic’s Alternative Energy Lab. The EIC focuses on finding sustainable ways to generate energy and provides innovative solutions that influence the future of the energy in Alberta and Canada. Data analysis of the solar photovoltaic systems, alternative energy in agriculture, power and renewable energy systems simulation are among the projects EIC is currently involved in. The team assists in applied research for industry while providing our students with meaningful, practical opportunities to further their learning.

Summer students in CIM-TAC and EIC are passionate about innovation and excited to learn in a unique environment. They are comfortable with work that is ambiguous and ever-changing. They will offer ideas and suggestions to their leaders and are prepared for those ideas to become learning challenges.

Position Responsibilities

  • Collect, clean, and analyze data from various sources including solar photovoltaic systems, alternative energy applications in agriculture, and power and renewable energy systems.
  • Develop predictive models, algorithms, and simulations to optimize energy generation, consumption, and efficiency.
  • Utilize programming languages (e.g., Python, SQL, PowerBI) and data analytics tools to perform statistical analysis and visualization.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify insights, trends, and opportunities for innovation in energy systems.
  • Participate in project meetings, data analysis workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions.

Required Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in a program specific to the role as outlined in the Position Responsibilities section, such as Computer Programming, or a technically focused related program such as Computing Science, Electrical, or Instrumentation Technology and related fields.
  • Available for work from May 4 – August 28, 2026
  • Ability to work from 8:30am – 4:30pm from Monday to Friday
  • Proven strong work ethic, attendance record and productivity in an independent work environment demonstrated through previous employment, education, or volunteer experience.
  • Proven ability to work within a team and communicate positively supporting new and different ideas
  • Ability to complete work duties such as sitting, standing, and/ light physical effort over modest periods of time, with some opportunity for relief and task variety. The work may involve movement of average weight material with periodic requirements to lift heavier objects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Consideration will be given to all students enrolled at RDP who are looking for a summer opportunity if you have a demonstrated strength in programing, electrical knowledge and data analysis.
  • Interest and understanding of computation and data science principles and fundamentals.
  • Interest in hands-on work with real data.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Passion for innovation and eagerness to learn about emerging technologies in manufacturing and renewable energy sectors.

Benefits and Compensation Information

An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory
holidays and benefits.
