POSITION: Business Intelligence (BI) Summer Student

REPORTS TO: Lead, Business Intelligence

DEPARTMENT: Business Planning & Intelligence

LOCATION: North Bay

REFERENCE: 800-17-27

RATE OF PAY: $18.10 per hour

ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT: The Summer Student – Business Intelligence supports the Planning & Development (PAD) Business Intelligence function by assisting in the development, documentation, and delivery of KPIs, reports, and analytics products. The role contributes to improving data quality, maintaining accurate reporting standards, and supporting ONTC’s data‑driven decision‑making. The student is expected to handle data responsibly, follow IMT guidance, and participate in structured development activities including weekly 1:1s with the BI Lead and a mid‑term feedback session.

MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support Building operational and strategic KPIs based on business requirements
  • Learn ONTC’s data models and understand how KPIs maps to upstream source systems
  • Support with Analyzing and summarizing datasets using Excel (cleaning, reconciliation, pivots)
  • Support the Design and development of KPI visuals and dashboards in Power BI and Microsoft Fabric
  • Support the BI Lead in preparing reports, summaries, presentations, and data insights for leadership

Data Quality, Testing & Documentation

  • Follow IMT data handling expectations (access, retention, PII minimization) and maintain clean audit trails
  • Profile source tables, reconcile numbers across systems, and document data quality issues
  • Implement data validation checks (completeness, duplicates, outliers) prior to dashboard publishing
  • Build test cases, support UAT with business users, log defects, and assist with release documentation (version notes, rollback plans)
  • Maintain and update KPI specifications in the KPI Dictionary (definitions, business rules, formulas, refresh cadence, lineage)

Collaboration & Team Support

  • Participate in requirement gathering sessions, capture user stories, and prepare meeting notes or plan on a page summaries
  • Organize SharePoint/Teams folders, maintain naming and versioning standards, and ensure dashboards meet accessibility basics (colour contrast, alt text)
  • Attend weekly 1:1 meeting with the BI Lead for coaching, alignment, and skill development
  • Participate in a mid term feedback session to review progress, strengths, and development opportunities

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Currently enrolled in a post‑secondary program in Data Analytics, Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or a related field
  • Strong analytical ability and solid experience with Excel (pivot tables, cleaning, formatting)
  • Working knowledge of Power BI (DAX, modeling, Power Query/M)
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric, cloud analytics, or SQL (assets)
  • Interest in KPI design, data modeling, and data storytelling
  • Strong attention to detail, especially in documentation and quality checks
  • Ability to communicate clearly — written notes, summaries, and simple requirements
  • Able to work independently with light guidance and manage multiple tasks
  • Comfortable handling confidential information under IMT data governance standards
