The Role

BGC is seeking a Junior Geological or Geotechnical Engineer with a strong interest in rock mechanics and laboratory rock testing to join our advanced soil and rock testing facility in Fredericton, New Brunswick (BGC Engineering | Fredericton, NB (matterport.com)).

BGC’s laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility which specializes in advanced testing of soil strength, compressibility and permeability alongside rock strength and deformation testing. Our rock testing equipment includes a servo-controlled fully automated uniaxial/triaxial load frame and automated direct shear system. The Junior Engineer will work closely with intermediate and senior engineers to conduct advanced rock testing, assist with test planning and execution, interpret results, and develop a strong foundation in applied rock mechanics and geotechnical laboratory practices.

Responsibilities

• Perform advanced geotechnical tests on rock specimens to determine their physical and mechanical properties
• Collect, analyze, and interpret data from rock tests to support engineering projects and research.
• Work closely with senior and intermediate engineers to support laboratory testing programs with varying deadlines and responsibilities
• Prepare laboratory test reports
• Follow lab procedures for safety and quality
• Train and mentor laboratory staff and laboratory visitors

Required Education, Experience & Competencies

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geological, or Geotechnical Engineering; coursework in rock mechanics is preferred
• 0–5 years of relevant industry experience
• Eligible for professional registration as an EIT or PEng
• Desire to work in a lab and learn advanced rock testing
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Position Requirements

Drug & Alcohol Testing To ensure we meet our client’s compliance requirements and our workplace health and safety commitments, BGC has a drug and alcohol policy that applies to this position.  The policy states that an employee may be required to take a drug and alcohol test prior to engaging in field work. This testing could be requested within an employee’s first week or in the future, as required. It is important to note that some clients also require random drug and alcohol testing, and/or testing in the event of a health and safety accident or incident.

Driver’s License BGC requires that employees have a valid driver's license, and that employees can drive a field pickup truck.  Upon hiring, BGC will require a driver’s abstract to allow for a safety review of your driving history.

Compensation The estimated base salary range for this position is $70,000-$85,000 CAD per annum, however base pay will be commensurate with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. BGC's compensation package also includes a discretionary bonus plan, training allowance, and comprehensive medical and dental plan.
