The location for this position is our Nanaimo, BC Office on the Island.

As a Co-op student, you will learn and experience:

Depending on what team the successful candidate is hired into, duties can also include some of the following:

  • Performs a variety of technical, planning and administrative functions related to integrated vegetation management by

collecting and analyzing data, drafting and implementing work plans and prescriptions, developing annual and long term

management plans and site specific prescriptions based on inventories, species, species diversification, growth rates and

environmental sensitivities; investigates tree related incidents and analyzes tree failure; assists in the evaluation of

vegetation risk in relation to circuit priority, public safety, wildfire risk, etc. and establishes action thresholds. May also assist

with the analysis and application of LiDAR, GIS, remote sensing and other spatial datasets to support vegetation

management planning, wildfire risk reduction and vegetation risk assessments.

  • Liaises with a variety of internal/external groups and agencies related to vegetation management work and issues.

  • Maintains a variety of records such as work inventories, specifications, historical records, etc.

  • Assists in the preparation of operating budgets and the annual work plan, assessing costs of planned projects and

programs and analyzing monthly variances; prepares maintenance activity summary reports.

  • Utilizes a variety of computer programs to develop, implement and monitor integrated vegetation management programs.

  • Assists with the evaluation and application of emerging technologies, including LiDAR, aerial imagery, GIS, remote

sensing and advanced analytics, to support utility vegetation management planning and decision making.

What you bring

  • To qualify as a candidate, individual's should be enrolled in the Co-op Program and have yet to graduate from a

recognized post-secondary institution in Canada.

  • Completed a minimum of 2nd year of Environmental studies (biology, forestry, natural resource management, geography,

geomatics, GIS or remote sensing major preferred) at an accredited university.

  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)

  • Strong communication skills, highly motivated and results oriented.

  • Requires a valid Class 5 BC driver’s license.

  • Experience with GIS, LiDAR, remote sensing, aerial imagery interpretation or spatial analysis would be considered an

asset.

  • This position is for a four month work term.

Location: Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada

  • Students are expected to work at the job location for their co-op role and it is the student’s responsibility to relocate

themselves if necessary.

Flexible work model role definitions:

Our four role types identify the degree of flexibility an employee could have to work from home based on the type of work

they do. The flexibility for an individual job is up to the manager for each position and the operational requirements.

Employees also have the right to work full-time from the office if they prefer. All of our roles require at least some in-person

time.

Resident – Works primarily (4+ days per week) in the office.

Hybrid – May be able to work from home up to 3 days per week.

Remote – Works from home 4+ days per week
