Job Summary

The Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (“HOOPP”) is a ~$135 billion defined benefit pension plan managed for the nurses and hospital workers of Ontario.  If you are looking to learn and grow in the world of Investment Management and applied climate and/or atmospheric science, then this is the opportunity for you. The Insurance Linked Securities (ILS) group is a two-person team that invests across the property catastrophe and specialty reinsurance space via external fund investments and catastrophe bonds. The ILS team is looking for a student intern to assist in day-to-day portfolio management activities, as well as developing advanced weather and/or climate analytics to support investment decision making.

What you will do:

Reporting to the Senior Portfolio Manager, ILS, the intern will assist the ILS group across multiple workstreams that contribute to portfolio management, advanced analytics development, and research in pricing and modeling catastrophe risk:

  • Assist the team in development/maintenance of the ILS analytics code base.
  • Validating data extraction methods and tools pertaining to insurance linked securities.
  • Perform ongoing climate and weather monitoring for the purpose of assessing catastrophe risk to the ILS portfolio.
  • Research and assist in developing probabilistic seasonal weather forecasting tools, particularly for North American tropical cyclone and wildfire perils.
  • Monitor secondary ILS market activity for purposes of identifying trade opportunities.

What you will bring:

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary education program at the graduate or undergraduate level with a focus in atmospheric/environmental/climate science, finance, and/or computer science.
  • Experience with programming languages such as shell, SQL, and python.
  • Exceptional research and development skills, with a track record of translating theoretical research/models into tools with practical usage.
  • Good problem-solving skills, critical thinking, curiosity and enthusiasm for applied atmospheric/environmental science in financial markets.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate across internal departments and external partners.
  • Hands-on experience working with operational weather and/or climate data is ideal.
  • Some exposure to fixed income mathematics and/or additional qualifications (e.g., CFA) is an asset
  • Share HOOPP’s core values: accountability, compassion and trustworthiness.
