Job title: Junior Accountant

Duration: 12-18 month contract

Intro paragraph: Our client is seeking a Junior Accountant to join their Finance team on a contract basis. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career accounting professional looking to gain exposure to full-cycle accounting within a healthcare environment. The successful candidate will support month-end activities, reconciliations, financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and audit preparation while working alongside an experienced finance team.

Principal tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Prepare month-end journal entries including funding allocations, prepaids, deferred capital contributions, payroll, revenues, and expenses.
  • Perform reconciliations of assigned General Ledger accounts.
  • Complete monthly and annual balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Prepare financial analysis and reporting using Excel.
  • Support capital projects accounting and cost tracking.
  • Perform Ministry of Health (MOH) program and funding reconciliations.
  • Provide ad hoc financial analysis, reporting, and administrative support.
  • Assist with interim and year-end audit preparation, including gathering supporting documentation.
  • Provide Accounts Payable coverage when required, including invoice processing, EFT payments, and cheque runs.
  • Provide Accounts Receivable coverage when required, including patient billing, payment processing, account reconciliations, statement generation, and insurance claims submissions.
  • Assist with collections from patients and insurance providers.
  • Support patient accounts and front desk coverage as needed.
  • Provide bi-weekly payroll support and coverage when required.
  • Maintain compliance with organizational policies related to confidentiality, quality improvement, workplace safety, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications and pre-requisites:

  • Diploma or Degree in Accounting, Commerce, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Enrollment in, or pursuit of, a CPA designation is considered an asset.
  • Previous accounting experience through co-op placements, internships, or professional work experience.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Exposure to ERP, payroll, or healthcare systems such as Meditech, HRIS, or Great Plains (GP) is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
