About Carbon Upcycling Technologies

Calgary CleanTech company advancing decarbonization

Full Description

Join Our Team as a Data Analyst Intern!

ABOUT CARBON UPCYCLING TECHNOLOGIES

Carbon Upcycling Technologies (CUT) is a Calgary-based CleanTech company on a mission to transform the cement and supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) industry. We have developed a breakthrough process that upcycles COโ‚‚ and industrial waste streams into high-performance SCMs โ€” reducing the embodied carbon of concrete while improving material performance.

As one of the most innovative companies in the global decarbonization space, CUT is advancing from laboratory science to commercial deployment. You will join a passionate, multidisciplinary team working at the intersection of materials science, process engineering, and climate impact.

WHY THIS ROLE STANDS OUT

This isn't your typical desk internship. As a Data Analyst Intern at CUT, you will:

  • Build hands-on experience in data structuring, cleaning, and dashboard development, working with complex technical datasets from materials and equipment systems
  • Contribute directly to improving data quality and visibility, enabling more informed decisions in plant operations and performance tracking
  • Support the development of analytical tools (e.g., dashboards and trackers) that translate raw data into actionable insights
  • Gain exposure to industrial processes and materials within a climate-focused context, supporting efforts to reduce emissions in cement production (~8% of global COโ‚‚ emissions)
  • Work closely with a small, fast-paced team where your analysis and outputs will have immediate, practical impact on operations

WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON

Reporting to the Program Manager, you will contribute to enhancing data integrity, visibility, and reporting to support operational performance and asset management:

Material Data Management & Dashboard Development

  • Review, audit, and standardize existing material databases across multiple material categories
  • Establish consistent naming conventions, units, and data structures
  • Identify data gaps and support the definition of material performance criteria
  • Prepare datasets for analysis and assist in the development of a Material Profile Dashboard
  • Document data structures and maintain a comprehensive data dictionary

Equipment Inventory & Maintenance Management

  • Conduct a comprehensive inventory of equipment and compile key asset information
  • Develop and maintain a centralized equipment database
  • Research and document maintenance requirements and service intervals
  • Create and manage a maintenance tracking system, identifying overdue or missing activities
  • Escalate data gaps, maintenance issues, and documentation deficiencies as required

Deliverables

  • Standardized material databases and supporting data dictionary
  • Material Profile Dashboard (draft and final)
  • Equipment inventory register and maintenance tracker
  • Final report summarizing activities, findings, and recommendations

WHAT YOU BRING

Required :

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program in Data Analytics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data management
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, startup environment

Nice to Have :

  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau)
  • Prior co-op or internship experience in an industrial, process, or manufacturing environment
  • Experience building dashboards or automated reporting tools
  • Interest or coursework in sustainability, low-carbon technology, or materials science
  • Ability to translate data into clear insights for non-technical stakeholders

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The cement industry produces approximately 4 billion tonnes of COโ‚‚ annually. CUT's technology has the potential to displace millions of tonnes of clinker with COโ‚‚-sequestering SCMs โ€” and the work you do this summer will directly advance that mission.

Youโ€™ll leave this internship with hands-on experience in data analytics, including data cleaning, structuring, and dashboard development. You will also gain exposure to industrial decarbonization efforts and contribute to improving data systems that support a more sustainable, lower-carbon future.
