Focus Area: Muskikiwak Oskapewak “Medicine Helpers” Indigenous YouthPre-Med Club
This Student Research Assistant position will support the Roots to Wellness Research Collaboratory by assisting with Indigenous youth wellness programming, community engagement, research support, and knowledge mobilization activities. Programming may be delivered through the Nanâtawihowikamik Healing Lodge & Wellness Clinic, a culturally grounded space rooted in Indigenous knowledge systems, relational care, ceremony, and community wellness.
The Student Research Assistant may support one or more research, cultural, mentorship, and community-based initiatives under the leadership of Dr. JoLee Sasakamoose, CIHR Research Chair in Applied Public Health, Indigenous Wellness and Health Equity. This position will likely interface with multiple Indigenous youth initiatives connected to the Collaboratory, including wellness, leadership, mentorship, cultural, educational, health advocacy, and pre-health programming.
This role provides opportunities for mentorship, experiential learning, leadership development, and participation in Indigenous community-based wellness and research initiatives that promote health equity and positive outcomes for Indigenous youth and communities.

Duties May Include:
1. Program Planning and Youth Engagement Support
Assist in planning and organizing Indigenous youth wellness, leadership, cultural, educational, and health-focused programming, including researching topics, identifying facilitators or speakers, coordinating logistics, and supporting youth engagement activities under the guidance of the Research Chair and Research Project Coordinator.
2. Communication and Community Support
Maintain respectful, ongoing communication with participating youth, families, schools, and community partners about programming schedules, events, activities, and other relevant information.
3. Community and Partnership Liaison
Assist in building relationships with schools, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community organizations, post-secondary institutions, and health system partners to support collaborative youth programming and wellness initiatives.
Position Requirements
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a graduate or undergraduate program, preferably in a relevant field of study.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Experience working collaboratively with diverse individuals and groups including Indigenous communities, fostering inclusive and respectful environments.
- Experiencing working directly with youth, providing support and guidance in an educational and/or recreational setting.
- Skilled in developing and organizing programming/activities/events for youth, with a focus on promoting positive outcomes.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office suite
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with issues affecting First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples is an asset.
- Ability to speak and understand an Indigenous language is an asset.
Physical Demands
There may be some light lifting involved.
Pay Grade As Per CUPE 2419 Salary Range Student Hourly Rate Status Term Work Hours
Average of 10 hours per week (up to a maximum of 15 hours per week).
Hours vary on a weekly basis. Hours may be reduced during July/August.
