Position Summary:
This job will be paid only for activities related to 4 sessions of data collection per participating family of the research study. Data collection will be conducted at study participant homes with parents and their preschool children.
Duties include:
- Attend off-campus 1-hour long home visits with the doctoral candidate leading the study.
- Attend off-campus 1-hour long home visits to ensure overall safety and compliance with data collection protocols. (e.g., to ensure that we are never alone with a child; so that parents feel safe in allowing us to conduct activities as approved by MCGILL UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF MEDICINE IRB # A00-B56-24B).
- Lead the conduction of in-home data collection protocols for the French-language sessions.
- When not conducting French-language sessions, the prospective RA will assist the doctoral candidate during all data collection home visits with ad-hoc requests at family homes related to data collection protocols such as preparing paperwork, tools, or handling and setting-up of materials for respective activities (e.g., turning the page on materials, handling of manipulatives, handling of technology, setting up cameras, etc.).
- When not conducting French-language sessions, the prospective RA will take observational notes about home visit that would be helpful for final data anlaysis.
- Establish good and safe rapport with parents and their preschool children to ensure voluntary participation from parent and child. This includes communicating and interacting with parents and children during home visits.
- Ensure culturally and linguistically responsive home data collection sessions with families in Montréal's bilingual Spanish–French communities of Latin American descent.
- Ability to carry materials up and down family homes via stairs.
Qualifications:
- Previous work in teaching children, facilitating activities for young children, and/or experience working with clinical populations (e.g., aphasiac, autistic, hard of hearing).
- Available M-F in the afternoons/early evenings; Saturday in early afternoons/early evening.
- Interest in child and language development.
- Interest in communication sciences and disorders.
- Fully bilingual and English and French; with and interest in learning about other non-official languages.
- TCPS 2: CORE-2022 (Course on Research Ethics) certificate.
- Awareness or willingness to learn about Latin-American culture and/or populations; including but not limited to language, cultural, immigration, and social issues that impact these communities in Canada.
- Awareness or willingness to learn about culturally responsive speech-language pathology practice and what it means to enact cultural humility when working with vulnerable populations.
- Awareness or willingness to learn about social determinants of health.
- Awareness or willingness to learn about intersectionality in health practice.
- Openness to feedback and constructive coaching Implement operational changes and strategic pivots swiftly based on instructions from managers, mentors, and peers.
- Objectively recognize personal strengths and skill gaps.
- Take full ownership of mistakes, identifying them as learning opportunities rather than deflecting blame.
- Maintain intellectual curiosity; actively invest time in developing new skills to meet changing demands of home visits.
- Strong belief that abilities and skills can be developed through continuous learning.
- Flexibility and willingness to step out of comfortable routines to experiment with new processes and adapt home visits for families.
- Ability to ask clarifying questions and reframe challenging feedback into tangible goals.
- Ability or willingness to talk and engage with parents who are developing their French.
- Ability or willingness to talk and engage with preschoolers who are developing their French
Bonuses but not required:
- Preference will be given to psychology, linguistics, or other related major to Speech-Language Pathology (e.g., education, pre-med, etc.)
- Knowledge of some Spanish (e.g., CEGEP or college courses in Spanish) is preferred but not required.
- Current or previous coursework in language development, phonetics, and/or other pre-SLP coursework.

Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 (qualifier) on a scale of 0-4.
